What is MOTS-c?
The name stands for 'mitochondrial ORF of the 12S rRNA type-c': its code lies in a section of mitochondrial DNA otherwise responsible for a ribosome component. Sequence MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR, molar mass 2,174.6 g/mol (CAS 1627580-64-6).
Research status
The first description in 2015 showed that MOTS-c activates the energy sensor AMPK in cells; mice given MOTS-c were better protected against diet-induced insulin resistance and weight gain. Later work reported that it moves into the nucleus under stress, and one study found improved physical capacity in older mice. In humans, mainly blood levels have been measured; there are no controlled studies with administered MOTS-c.
Status
MOTS-c is not approved as a medicine. Research use only. Compare with MOTS-c vs. SS-31; also available as capsules.
