What is SS-31?
SS-31 (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, 639.8 g/mol) is a Szeto-Schiller peptide. Alternating aromatic and basic residues and a dimethyltyrosine let it enter cells despite its positive charge, where it accumulates at the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Research status
Studies examine stabilisation of the cristae, the respiratory chain and reactive oxygen species in heart, kidney and mitochondrial disease models. Clinically a large trial in mitochondrial myopathy missed its primary endpoints; the US approval in Barth syndrome rests on a small study and an intermediate endpoint. More in SS-31 and elamipretide.
Status
Not approved in the EU. The research reagent is not a medicine; research use only. Compare with MOTS-c vs. SS-31.
