Structure
Methylene blue (methylthioninium chloride, C₁₆H₁₈ClN₃S) switches between the oxidised blue form and reduced, colourless leucomethylene blue. This redox behaviour makes it a classic laboratory dye and electron carrier.
State of research
Research covers electron transfer that bypasses complexes I–IV, oxygen utilisation, monoamine oxidase inhibition and models of neurodegenerative disease; in microscopy it is used as a stain.
Status
Methylene blue is approved as a medicinal substance for specific indications. The material offered here is a research reagent.
