What is LL-37?
LL-37 is cleaved from the precursor protein hCAP18 and starts with two leucines, hence the name (4,493 g/mol). It forms a positively charged amphipathic helix that inserts into the negatively charged membranes of bacteria and makes them leaky.
Research status
Studies examine direct activity against pathogens, biofilm inhibition, recruitment of immune cells and roles in wound healing and skin diseases such as psoriasis and rosacea. LL-37 is a standard tool of antimicrobial peptide research.
