Structure
ACTH (1-39) is derived from proopiomelanocortin (POMC) in the pituitary. The first 24 amino acids carry the full biological activity at the melanocortin-2 receptor; residues 4–10 are the basis of Semax.
State of research
Research covers cortisol synthesis, the stress axis (HPA axis) and effects at other melanocortin receptors.
Status
Corticotropin products are approved in some countries; ACTH is on the WADA Prohibited List.
